Description

Cristec HPO24-80 HPOWER marine battery charger

Cristec HPO24-80 is an HPOWER high-output battery charger for 24 V marine DC systems. Higher-current charging equipment needs careful integration with the battery bank and vessel electrical installation. Battery chemistry and capacity, AC supply, DC conductor size, protective devices, ventilation and the physical route of heavy cables all need to be checked. F&C Marine can help review the system and confirm whether HPO24-80 is the correct Cristec charger before supply.

Battery-bank matching

Record the nominal 24 V battery-bank voltage, chemistry, capacity and arrangement. Identify whether the charger will serve domestic, start or auxiliary banks and check how the existing unit is connected. Higher charger output should not be selected simply to reduce charging time without considering the battery manufacturer’s permitted charge rate. Use current battery specifications together with the Cristec documentation when selecting the charging profile and confirming that the bank is appropriate for the charger.

AC input and heavy DC cabling

Inspect the AC supply, isolation and protective devices and confirm that they are suitable for the charger installation. High-output DC wiring requires particular attention to conductor size, connection quality and route length. Excessive voltage drop can reduce charging performance, while loose or corroded lugs can generate heat. Existing heavy cables should only be retained if their rating and physical condition are appropriate. Protection should be positioned and rated in accordance with manufacturer documentation and vessel electrical practice.

Mounting, ventilation and service access

Install the charger in a dry and protected space with the ventilation and clearances required by Cristec. Higher-output equipment can make good airflow and heat management particularly important. Avoid mounting where stored gear can obstruct ventilation or where water can reach terminals. Leave service access to connectors, protective devices and indicators. Support large DC cables independently so their weight and vessel vibration do not place mechanical stress on charger terminals.

Commissioning under load

Before energising, verify polarity, terminal security, protection and battery configuration. Confirm the selected charging profile and monitor the system under realistic load. Measure voltage at the charger and battery to identify cable drop and check that no connection becomes abnormally warm. Observe charger status and any alarms. If the system feeds several banks, verify each intended output. Record the final cable sizes, settings and battery information so future changes can be assessed correctly.

Fault finding before replacement

A large battery bank that appears to charge slowly may have weak batteries, high-resistance connections, an AC supply problem or incorrect settings rather than a failed charger. Check input power, protective devices, isolators and battery condition before removing the old unit. Record any alarm codes and measurements while the fault is present. Moving heavy cables can temporarily restore a poor connection, so evidence collected before replacement can be important in identifying the real cause.

Documentation and related support

For current Cristec information, see Cristec battery chargers. The applicable HPOWER manual should remain the final reference for AC input, charging profiles, cable sizing, protective devices, ventilation and installation. F&C Marine also provides a Marine Electronics Knowledge Base covering wider marine electrical topics.

Before ordering Cristec HPO24-80

Send the vessel type, battery chemistry and capacity, current charger model, photographs of the electrical installation, AC supply information and approximate DC cable lengths. If replacing a fault, include symptoms, alarm information and tests already completed. F&C Marine can then help confirm whether Cristec HPO24-80 is appropriately matched and identify any changes to cabling, protection, ventilation or mounting before quotation.
