Description

Cristec YPO45-12-40/MPPT solar charging system

Cristec YPO45-12-40/MPPT is the marine solar-charging configuration listed as 12/24V MPPT, 12V, with a maximum stated solar input voltage of 80VDC. Correct selection depends on the complete electrical system rather than the controller alone, so the battery-bank voltage and chemistry, photovoltaic array, cable sizes, protection, mounting position and any existing charging equipment should all be checked before order.

Matching the MPPT controller to the installation

An MPPT solar controller must be matched to both the solar array and the battery system. Record the panel make and model, quantity, series or parallel arrangement, open-circuit voltage and expected current, then compare those figures with the limits in the current Cristec documentation. The battery side also needs to suit the nominal system voltage and the charging requirements of the batteries fitted. If batteries or panels have changed since the original installation, do not assume the old controller settings or wiring arrangement remain suitable.

Solar-array voltage and operating margin

The maximum input figure is an electrical limit, not a target operating voltage. Panel open-circuit voltage can vary with temperature and the way modules are connected, so the array should be designed with suitable margin. Check polarity and actual array voltage before connection, and provide the isolation and protective devices required for the installation. Where an existing array is being retained, identify every panel and junction point rather than relying only on a previous system label. Mixed panels, damaged connectors or undocumented alterations can make the real array different from the original design.

Battery bank, charging profile and other charge sources

Solar charging normally operates alongside alternators, shore chargers or other DC sources. Confirm the battery chemistry, nominal voltage and capacity, and make sure each charging source is configured appropriately for the same bank. A solar controller cannot correct unsuitable battery settings elsewhere in the system. If lithium batteries are installed, check the battery manufacturer’s limits and any BMS requirements. For lead-acid systems, verify the charging profile and temperature-related requirements. Documenting all charge sources makes future servicing much easier.

Cabling, protection and mounting

Use cable sizes appropriate to current, route length and acceptable voltage drop. Protect conductors from chafe, heat, water and accidental short circuit, and keep terminations secure and accessible. The controller should be mounted in the orientation and environment specified by Cristec, with the required ventilation and service clearance. Heavy battery cables should be supported so they do not strain terminals. On a refit, inspect existing wiring for corrosion, overheating or previous repairs before deciding it can be reused.

Commissioning and fault checks

Before energising the system, verify battery polarity, solar-array polarity, protective devices and all terminal connections. Confirm the battery profile and any available controller settings, then observe charging voltage and current under realistic conditions. Where possible, measure voltage at both the controller and battery to identify excessive drop. If charging is poor, check sunlight, panel output, connectors, isolation devices, batteries and other charge sources before assuming the controller has failed. Record the final panel arrangement, protection and settings for future maintenance.

Documentation and related guidance

For current manufacturer information see Cristec marine electrical products. The applicable Cristec manual should be the final reference for voltage limits, wiring, charging profiles, protection and installation clearances. F&C Marine also provides a Marine Electronics Knowledge Base with practical guidance for marine electrical and electronic installations.

Before ordering Cristec YPO45-12-40/MPPT

Send F&C Marine the vessel type, battery voltage, chemistry and capacity, solar-panel details, panel quantity and wiring arrangement, existing controller or charger information, cable lengths and photographs of the installation. If this is a fault replacement, include the symptoms and tests already completed. We can then help confirm the correct model, compatibility and installation requirements and check current availability before a quotation is finalised.
