Description

Cristec YPO45-12-60/MPPT charging system

Cristec YPO45-12-60/MPPT is a Cristec charging configuration combining the identified 12 V YPOWER arrangement with MPPT solar-charging functionality. A combined shore/AC and solar charging system needs the battery bank, AC source, photovoltaic array, DC cabling, protection and charger settings to be considered together. F&C Marine can help confirm the exact configuration and system requirements before supply.

Battery-bank compatibility

Start with the battery bank. Record nominal voltage, chemistry, capacity and the manufacturer’s charging limits. Both charging sources need to be configured for the same battery requirements, and the total available charge rate should be appropriate for the bank. If the vessel has changed batteries since the original installation, review all charger settings rather than assuming the previous profile remains suitable. Mixed or incorrectly configured charging sources can create inconsistent battery performance.

Solar array and MPPT input

The photovoltaic side needs to be designed within the controller’s permitted input range. Check panel open-circuit voltage, operating voltage, current and the way panels are connected. Allow for the effect of environmental conditions on array voltage and use the current Cristec documentation when confirming limits. Install suitable isolation and protection and route solar cabling where it is protected from chafe, heat and water. Do not connect an array until polarity and voltage have been verified.

AC charger and DC cabling

The AC charging side requires a suitable input supply, isolation and protective devices. Battery cables need to be sized for current, route length and acceptable voltage drop. Because multiple charging sources may share the same bank, the DC distribution should be clearly documented. Keep terminations secure and protected from accidental short circuit. Existing cables should only be reused when their rating and condition are appropriate for the new charging arrangement.

Mounting, ventilation and access

Install the charging equipment in locations that meet the manufacturer’s environmental and ventilation requirements. Leave access to terminals, indicators, fuses and communication points. Solar and battery isolators should be identifiable and accessible. Support heavier conductors so they do not place strain on terminals. A tidy, labelled installation is particularly valuable with combined charging sources because future fault finding needs to distinguish AC charging, solar charging and battery wiring.

Commissioning both charging sources

Before energising, verify battery polarity, protection, solar-array polarity and AC supply. Confirm the battery profile and any MPPT settings. Test the AC and solar charging functions separately where practical, then observe combined operation. Measure voltage at the charger and battery and check for abnormal voltage drop or heating. Record the final panel configuration, cable sizes, protective devices and battery settings for future service.

Documentation and related support
