Description

LCJ RM-STBG rotating mast interface

LCJ RM-STBG is an LCJ interface for wind-sensor installations on rotating masts where compatible Raymarine or B&G instrument systems need corrected wind information. A rotating mast changes the relationship between sensor direction and vessel heading, so the complete installation needs the correct interface, mast-angle information and receiving equipment. F&C Marine can help confirm the system architecture before supply.

Why a rotating mast needs an interface

A conventional wind sensor mounted on a fixed mast has a stable reference to the vessel. On a rotating mast that reference changes as the mast turns. The interface therefore needs appropriate mast-position information so the wind direction presented to the instrument system can be corrected. Before selecting equipment, identify the existing wind sensor, rotating-mast arrangement and how mast angle is measured. The interface cannot compensate correctly if the required reference data is missing or inaccurate.

Raymarine and B&G integration

The STBG arrangement is intended for compatible Raymarine and B&G wind systems, but exact model matching is still required. Record the instrument server, display and any existing converter or interface. Older vessels may contain equipment from several generations, and previous modifications can make the wiring different from the original drawings. Photograph existing connections and labels before removal so the intended signal path can be confirmed and documented.

Mast-angle and wiring considerations

The rotating-mast interface depends on reliable wind and mast-angle information as well as stable power. Cable routes should be protected from water, chafe, sharp edges and movement. Any sensor that measures mast position needs to be mounted and calibrated in accordance with its documentation. Check that the reference angle corresponds correctly with the vessel centreline. A wiring or calibration error can create a wind-direction offset that might otherwise be blamed on the masthead wind sensor.

Commissioning the corrected wind data

After installation, verify wind speed and corrected direction through a useful range of mast positions. Compare mast-angle information with the physical mast position and check that the receiving instruments change as expected. Where possible, test under realistic sailing conditions. If several displays use the corrected data, compare values at each destination. Record the zero reference, interface model, connected equipment and any calibration settings for future service.

Fault finding and maintenance

If corrected wind direction becomes unreliable, check the wind sensor, mast-angle source, RM-STBG power, interface wiring and receiving instruments as separate stages. A failure in the angle sensor can make a healthy wind sensor appear wrong. Inspect accessible cables and connectors for damage or corrosion, particularly where movement occurs. Keeping a clear diagram of the signal path is especially valuable on rotating-mast systems because several components contribute to the final displayed direction.

Documentation and related guidance

See LCJ Capteurs products and LCJ support downloads. Use current LCJ documentation as the final reference for RM-STBG wiring, mast-angle requirements and compatible instruments. F&C Marine also provides an ultrasonic wind-sensor guide and the Marine Electronics Knowledge Base.

Before ordering LCJ RM-STBG

Send the vessel type, rotating-mast details, wind-sensor model, mast-angle sensor information, exact Raymarine or B&G instrument models and photographs of the existing wiring. If the system has a fault, include the symptoms and any tests already completed. F&C Marine can then help confirm whether LCJ RM-STBG is the correct interface and identify the additional information or installation work required.
