What Is a Class A AIS Pilot Plug?

A pilot plug provides a convenient data connection to a vessel’s Class A AIS transponder. It allows suitable equipment to access available AIS data without a permanent connection to the vessel’s bridge electronics.

This lead connects the Class A AIS pilot port to USB so compatible computer software can access the available NMEA 0183 data.

AIS and GPS Data on a Computer

When connected to a compatible Class A AIS transponder, the lead can provide available NMEA 0183 AIS and GPS data through the computer’s USB interface.

The USB adaptor creates a virtual COM port. Compatible navigation, AIS or marine-data software can then use that COM port as its NMEA data source.

Bidirectional Connection

The adaptor provides bidirectional NMEA 0183 communication. Any configuration or programming functions available through the pilot connection depend on the connected AIS transponder and compatible software.

Computer Driver Information

Compatible computer systems may automatically locate and install the required USB driver. Where manual driver installation is required, driver software can be obtained from FTDI.
